New Landscape Painting - Hope Comes in the Morning

Hope Comes in the Morning

“Hope Comes in the Morning” is the latest landscape painting created for the Fall 2007 Exhibit at the Carriage Factory Gallery in Newton, Kansas.

The painting is painted on hand-stretched, oil primed Artfix linen canvas.

Although the exhibit will include a few paintings that include horses, the focus of my portion of the exhibit will be landscape paintings, especially those featuring the Flint Hills of Kansas.

The exhibit opens October 30 and closes December 29, 2007.

Landscape Study #287 2007

It was a challenging week for painting aceo landscapes. Monday, which is my usual studio day, was partially consumed with less creative, but no less necessary activities and by the end of the day, the best I could say was that I had painted skies on ten new aceos.

There is nothing remarkable about that, since I routinely start aceo landscape paintings in groups because the sky colors take so long to dry.

This batch was different because I used a palette knife to paint the skies. An over-large palette knife, it is true, but a palette knife nevertheless.

Colors were chosen based on the toned surface of the card and were blended wet-into-wet on the painting surface.

Landscape Study #288 2007

Landscape Study 287 2007 and Landscape Study 288 2007 (both shown above) represent the first two of those landscapes. They were the only two that had dried enough to paint on by Wednesday.

Landscape Study 289 2007, shown below, is not one of the palette knife aceos, but it is one that had a sky painted on it some time ago. Some two weeks ago, I believe.

Landscape Study #289 2007

This last aceo landscape is my favorite of this week’s work because the blue tones along the horizon are very close to the illusion of distance that most fascinates me about the Flint Hills.

These three aceo paintings represent the body of work for the week. They are the only paintings I was able to complete during this very busy week.

All three paintings are painted on triple-gessoed Crescent museum quality mat board.

Landscape Study #281 2007

Another week, six more aceo landscape paintings in oil.

Most of these paintings were painted in three days; two on October 9, one on October 10 and the remainder on October 12. A busy weekend schedule (including a trip to the symphony on Saturday evening … what a delight!) necessitated this somewhat abbreviated studio schedule.

This week’s work focused on a more “painterly” painting technique and/or on capturing the browns and golds so dominant at this time of the year in Kansas.

Landscape Study #284 2007

They may look simple and straightforward, but those browns and golds come in a variety of variations depending on whether the color is in the grass, in a field of wheat stubble or in fields of milo. Milo alone comes in many different shades of gold and sienna and is a challenge!

I think my favorite for the week is Landscape Study 284 2007 (above), which combines bright autumn light, golden tallgrass and green Cottonwood foliage with a simple composition.

Landscape Study #286 2007

I do confess to having a soft spot for Landscape Study 286 2007, as well, though. Water in all of its forms fascinates me and has appeared often in these miniature oil paintings. I can’t claim any great expertise in painting it yet, but the many attempts are a lot of fun!

These six paintings are painted on triple-gessoed Crescent museum quality mat board.

Landscape Study #275 2007

With the press of personal and gallery activities these days, making time to paint has been a challenge.

Finding the time to do daily blog updates has been an even greater challenge, hence the fact that a week has passed since my last previous update.

And already today, it is after 6:30 p.m. and I am still working on my ‘to-do’ list for my day off. Alas!

So I am going to do a weekly post, beginning with this week.

Landscape Study #277 2007

The week ending October 6 was a good week for painting. I worked several projects, including a 20×24 portrait in oil, two smaller exhibit paintings and six aceo landscapes.

Landscape Study 275 2007 is the first aceo landscape painting in a week that focused mainly on painting skies and clouds.

I also tweaked the greens quite a bit either by painting over toned backgrounds (as with Landscape Study 275 2007, above) or by mixing various yellows with white for lighter values.

The overall result is a very interesting collection of 6 landscape paintings.

All of this week’s aceo landscapes are available for purchase on ebay. Search for ‘horse painter’ to see my current offerings.
