Landscape Study #249 2007
The furious pace of painting aceo landscapes continues. Two more for tonight. At this rate, if I do not paint at all tomorrow, the last day of the week, I will have completed two weeks’ worth of aceo landscapes! Amazing!
This landscape shows continued experimentation with Prussian Blue in the sky and distant hills. I also used it in the deep shadow in the foreground and it works very well in all of those capacities. It is a good color to have in the paint box!

Landscape Study #248 2007
Neal and I were out walking one evening after dark (as we quite often do), and I happened to be looking up at the sky. The night sky provides endless fascination throughout the year and I have tried many times to paint it, but always will only lackluster results.
On this particular night, I noticed something I had not noticed before. The deep blue-black of the night sky actually had some green in it, too. I asked Neal for his opinion and he came to the same conclusion.
I decided on the spot to try painting a nocturne with Prussian Blue, which is a very deep, dark blue with a green tint.
This aceo landscape painting is the result. I think I have finally found the secrete to painting night scenes!

Landscape Study #245 2007
I am not sure what has gotten into me, but I praise the LORD for it!
After two weeks of having time only to do one aceo landscape painting a day, I suddenly find myself with nine new aceo landscapes … and it’s only Wednesday.
What’s more, I have the first paint on one new landscape for a special project and worked on the drawing for another new landscape (with horses!).
Not at all a quiet week in the studio, that’s for sure!
This landscape painting is the first of three aceo landscapes I painted tonight.

Landscape Study #241 2007
It was a very good painting evening in spite of having a multitude of things to do. i finished four aceo landscapes in one sitting this evening!
The skies for these had already been painted and were dry, so I began by lightly sanding each one, then painting clouds on each one.
That was followed by painting a horizon, then a middleground on each card. Finally, I added foreground elements and the details that made them separate and individual designs.

Landscape Study #239 2007
This past week, I tried out a new skill by stretching a piece of Artfix Belgian Linen Canvas on my own. While the process was much more physical than I expected, it was also enjoyable and appealed very much to my enjoyment of putting things together.
In addition to four, hand stretched canvases now waiting for paintings, I ended up with several smaller pieces of canvas, including four aceo sized pieces.
I put two of them to good use today and painted two new aceo landscapes. Well, actually, one landscape and one sky scape full of clouds.
Painting on this high quality canvas is a delight! I look forward to using up those two remaining aceo sized pieces as well as getting to work on the larger pieces.

Landscape Study #238 2007
I didn’t intend to paint another winter scene when I sat down to paint today. The prepared art card made the decision for me.
Over the course of the last several days, I have painted sky areas on almost two dozen cards. Varying shades of blue, various paint applications, various ideas for what the landscapes would look like when finished.
For this card, I applied that initial paint layer with thinned paint. When I looked at it tonight, the random shapes of color and lights and darks immediately suggested snow drifts.
I did nothing further with the sky, using the existing brush strokes to suggest thin, layered clouds. A few well-placed highlights brought the snow drifts to life. After that, it was a matter of painting trees from foreground to background and - wa-la! - a finished landscape painting!

Landscape Study #237 2007
The sky is the subject for this landscape painting.
A corner of blue remains as clouds move in. A feathery weather front followed by more solid clouds. In the distance, three soaring birds ride the thermals.
What the view must be like from up there!

Landscape Study #236 2007
This landscape is the essence of the Flint Hills. A good portion of that vast, tallgrass region is a series of hills, stretching as far as the eye can see in any direction. At night, there are very few artifical lights of any kind to be seen.
During the day, however, the subtle gradations of light and shadow, of contour and color, are a feast for the eyes.

Landscape Study #234 2007
Two aceo paintings today; one to make up for the day I missed yesterday and one for today.
This landscape is another one featuring special techniques to paint clouds. Those feather soft clouds were painted without design, using a small brush and a loose wrist to flick paint onto the card.
This may be one of the best skies I have painted this year.
It is definitely among my personal favorites.

Landscape Study #233 2007
Ah! Winter!
Brisk, cold air!
Crisp, new fallen snow!
Hats and boots and gloves!
Yeah, I know. It’s August 20 and it has been in the high 90s or low 100s every day for the last week or two.
But what a great way to cool off, even if it’s just for a moment or two.
